History of Great Warley

Great Warley, West Warley or Warley Abbess, is a large, scattered parish, the residence of many respectable families. The views form Warley Hill, the residence of Mrs Clay, and Warley Place, the residence of General Bonham, are beautiful and picturesque. It is in Chafford Hundred and Romford Union, South Essex, 6 miles east of Romford, 18 from London, 7 north of Grays, and 2 south of Brentwood station. Acreage – arable, 1,339; pasture, 1,017; common, now enclosed, 159, and wood, 209. The population, in 1851, was 952. The church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is an ancient building. The living is a rectory, valued at £520, in the presentation of St John’s College, Cambridge, and incumbency of the Rev Hastings Robinson DD. A National school has been built by the rector. The population, in 1851, was 951, having been lately doubled, since the enclosure of Warley Common, a few years since, a new church, called Christ Church, with the parsonage and school, have been erected, for which a district is about to be formed out of those portions of North Warley, Shenfield and South Weald, lying in its immediate neighbourhood, but upwards of two miles from their respective parish churches. The endowment has been given by Miss Clay. The County lunatic asylum, capable of holding 450 patients, is in the adjoining parish of South Weald, about half a mile from the new church.
