History of Rainham in 1874
Rainham,
is a village, parish, and station on the London and Southend railway, in the
Southern division of the county, Chafford Hundred, Romford Union, and county
court district, Chafford rural deanery, Essex archdeaconry and Rochester
diocese, 3 miles north west from Purfleet, 13 from London, 7 ½ north west from
Grays, and 5 east of Barking: The village
forms a considerable street on the London Road, and the Ingerbourne brook, over
which is a bridge, and has a quay on the creek, at its mouth, in the Thames. The
church of S S Helen & Gils (the only one in England dedicated to these saints
jointly), is an old structure, supposed to have been built in the reign of Henry
II, with chancel, nave, south aisle and porch: the arch separating the nave from
the chancel is Norman: the tower contains 3 bells.
The register dates from the year 1560.
