History of Wennington

 

Wennington is a parish and village, near to the shore of the Thames, in Chafford Hundred, Romford Union, South Essex, 2 miles from the Rainham station of the London, Tilbury and Southend railway, 2 miles north west of Purfleet, 7 ½ east of barking, 8 west of Orsett and 14 from London, with an area of 1,285 acres, and a population, in 1851, of 177. The church of St Peter is a handsome building with a square tower, embattled, and one bell. The living is a rectory, value £421 rent charge, and 4 acres of land without house, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester; the incumbent is he Rev george William Curtis, BA, who is also a rector of Padworth, berks and does not reside here.
